KNARESBOROUGH SCHOOLS FOOTBALL GALA DAY 2009
The annual Knaresborough Celtic Inter–schools football Gala took place on Tuesday 23rd June in soaring temperatures. The event is a tournament in which teams from Knaresborough′s 4 primary schools – St John′s, Aspin Park, St Mary′s and Meadowside – all participate. Each school entered a team from class 4, class 5, class 6 and girls side and played a series of round–robin mateches. Liasing with the club, the schools also nominated their footballer of the year in recognition of individual contribution throughout the school term.
All games were played with great spirit and there was plenty of enthusiasm and talent on show as 180 children gave their to try to help their school capture the Inter–schools Cup. The competition was close in all the age groups and Meadowside emerged victorious as overall champions.
Knaresborough Celtic are again the FA′s District Community Club of the Year and this is one of several events organised by the club. This year, the club has helped all of the Primary schools in Knaresborough achieve Charter Standard accreditation with the FA, thus opening access to FA funds and equipment. Our Gala Day is now well and truly established in the diary of all the schools. This has let to more and more practice sessions for the children, thus strengthening the sports offering and participation.
Knaresborough Celtic has forged links with the towns 4 primary schools and has helped them all achieve FA charter status. The club runs a Champions league where a girls team and years 4‚ 5 and 6 from each school compete throughout the school year. At the end of the season the club holds a schools gala where the teams compete in a knockout tournament and a trophy is awarded for the winners of each age group along with the overall winner of the Champions League and an award for footballer of the year for each school.
